MC Plans Dynamic Parking Rates in City

by The_unmuteenglish

CHANDIGARH, May 26— The Municipal Corporation (MC) is planning to introduce dynamic pricing in selected parking lots across the city, as part of its upcoming Smart Parking Project aimed at modernizing urban parking infrastructure.

The proposed system would adjust parking fees based on demand and time of day, offering lower rates during non-peak hours. A pilot location — the parking lot in Sector 17 opposite Sector 9 — is likely to be the first to adopt the model.

“This will help maximise occupancy and improve revenue collection,” said BJP councillor Saurabh Joshi, who heads the Smart Parking Committee. “If there’s no rush, the parking fee will be lower. It’s a flexible and resident-friendly approach.”

The draft Request for Proposal (RFP) outlining these changes will be presented in the upcoming meeting of the MC General House for approval. The committee has also invited stakeholders to join the discussion and provide input during the session.

In a move to encourage innovation, the committee has written to institutions like Panjab University and Punjab Engineering College, seeking suggestions and research-based solutions to enhance the city’s parking system. Students and researchers have been asked to submit their ideas by May 27, with the promise of certificates of appreciation for contributions that are incorporated into the final plan.

“We want real smart parking solutions,” said Joshi. “That’s why we’re reaching out to academia and the public.”

The Smart Parking Project, which follows the General House’s approval of up to a 40% hike in parking rates, is designed to modernise the city’s parking infrastructure before any rate hike takes effect.

Key features under consideration include:

  • Mobile parking app with real-time availability data
  • Advance booking option at a marginal extra charge
  • Digital payments through the app
  • Automatic entry and exit gates to reduce congestion

The MC has faced criticism for approving higher parking fees, but councillors have clarified that revised rates will only apply once the smart system is operational.

The Smart Parking Committee aims to ensure that the overhaul benefits both residents and civic finances by enhancing transparency, convenience, and efficiency.
