Chandigarh, October 18, 2024: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced special media awards to recognize the exceptional efforts of media houses in promoting voter education and election awareness during the 2024 election cycle. These awards aim to honor campaigns that have significantly contributed to improving the voting process and raising awareness about key electoral topics.
According to the ECI, the awards will be presented in four categories: print media, television, radio, and online/social media. The selected campaigns will be honored with a certificate of appreciation and a memento, which will be presented on National Voter’s Day, January 25, 2025.
“We aim to acknowledge and reward media campaigns that have effectively highlighted the importance of fair voting practices, promoted the use of IT innovations in the election process, and played a role in combating false or misleading information,” an ECI spokesperson said.
“These campaigns must have had a positive impact on voter awareness and participation.”
Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C elaborated on the significance of these awards, emphasizing that the evaluation will focus on the quality of voter awareness campaigns, the credibility of the information presented, and the reach of the campaign.
“We believe media plays a crucial role in educating the public about their electoral rights and duties. These awards aim to encourage more media houses to actively participate in strengthening democratic processes,” he added.
The awards will highpoint campaigns that not only promote voter participation but also bring attention to the innovations in election-related IT applications. The goal, according to the ECI, is to “inspire media outlets to contribute more to electoral education and ensure a well-informed and participative electorate in future elections.”
