Shillong, Dec. 7: December 12 will be observed as a state holiday in Meghalaya to commemorate the death anniversary of Pa-Togan Nengminza Sangma, a valiant freedom fighter from the Garo tribe. Schools, banks, and government offices across the state will remain closed to honor his sacrifice during India’s struggle against British rule.

Pa-Togan Sangma is remembered for his courageous leadership in 1872 when he led a night attack on British forces in Macha Rongkrek village.

Despite their bravery, the Garo warriors were overpowered by the British army’s advanced weaponry, and Sangma was martyred in the fight. His sacrifice remains a symbol of resistance against colonial oppression in Northeast India.

The state government pays tribute annually to this heroic figure, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
