Amritsar/New Delhi, April 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to the victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, calling it a “dark chapter” in India’s history and a defining moment in the country’s fight for independence.

“We pay homage to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh. The coming generations will always remember their indomitable spirit,” Modi posted on X, marking the 105th anniversary of the massacre.

On April 13, 1919, British troops opened fire on a peaceful gathering at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, killing hundreds of people protesting the Rowlatt Acts, which gave sweeping powers to the colonial administration.

Modi noted that the sacrifice of those who died in the massacre left a lasting mark on the freedom movement. “It was indeed a dark chapter in our nation’s history. Their sacrifice became a major turning point in India’s freedom struggle,” he said.
