MOGA, Punjab, Jan 3 — A young man was shot dead after assailants fired at least 15 to 20 rounds at his car in Punjab’s Moga district on Saturday morning, police said, as the victim’s family alleged the killing was linked to political rivalry in the area.

The victim, identified as Umarsir Singh, was attacked near his home in Bhinder Kalan village of the Dharamkot constituency while leaving for work. Singh was employed with Nestle India Limited in Moga.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, a group of armed men intercepted Singh’s vehicle a short distance from his residence and opened indiscriminate fire, killing him on the spot.

“This was not a random attack. It was a well-planned conspiracy,” Singh’s brother Ajmer Singh said. “There has been political hostility since the Block Samiti elections. We strongly suspect the involvement of the village sarpanch.”

Family members alleged that Singh had been facing threats due to political disagreements in the village, though police said all angles were being examined.

Senior police officers reached the scene along with a forensic team, and evidence was collected from the site. The body was later sent for a post-mortem examination.

“We have registered a case and launched an investigation,” a senior police officer said. “CCTV footage from the village and nearby roads is being examined to identify the assailants and trace their escape route.”

Police said teams have been formed to conduct raids and arrests are expected soon.
