Faridkot, July 23: A Mohali resident was gunned down by three motorcycle-borne assailants in Faridkot’s Brahmanwala village on Tuesday, in what police suspect may have been a case of mistaken identity. The deceased, identified as Yadvinder Singh, was working as a driver for Jiwanjot Singh alias Jugnu, a Mansa resident who had earlier been given a clean chit by police in the Sidhu Moose Wala murder case.
The incident occurred shortly after Jugnu attended a bhog ceremony in the village. According to officials, he switched vehicles following the event, and Yadvinder drove away in Jugnu’s SUV. As the vehicle left the gurdwara premises, three unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on it.
Yadvinder sustained fatal gunshot wounds, while three others in the vehicle escaped unhurt.
While preliminary suspicion points to a mistaken identity, Faridkot senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pragya Jain said it was too early to draw conclusions. “It would be premature to confirm that the murder was due to mistaken identity,” she said.
The SSP confirmed that CCTV footage from the area has been retrieved and shows three attackers involved. “We have secured crucial leads from the footage. Police teams are actively working to identify and apprehend the culprits,” she added.
Investigators are looking into all possible motives, including any past affiliations or threats related to Jugnu. The case has intensified concerns about lingering fallout from the high-profile Moose Wala case and its peripheral figures.
