Chandigarh, June 18, 2025: Prof Namita Gupta from the Centre for Human Rights and Duties has been appointed the new Dean Students’ Welfare (Women) at Panjab University, succeeding Prof Simrit Kahlon of the Geography Department. The appointment will remain in effect until further orders.

Kahlon, who had taken over as DSW (Women) in April 2023 and was granted an extension earlier this year, will now be replaced by Gupta, who brings both administrative and student welfare experience to the role.

Prof Gupta served as the university’s Director of Public Relations during the 2023–24 academic session. She was also the warden of Girls’ Hostel No. 6 for five years and worked closely with current DSW (Men) Prof Amit Chauhan when they were both wardens. In recognition of her contributions, she received the State Award for Social Service from the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator in 2023.

Speaking about her new role, Gupta said she plans to address key student concerns. “I aim to bring greater transparency to the hostel allotment process and work towards advancing the welfare of women students across campus,” she said.
