Patiala, 12 December 2024: The final day of nominations for the Punjab Municipal Corporation elections witnessed significant commotion in Patiala as BJP leaders and Punjab Police clashed outside the Corporation office. Tensions escalated when BJP candidate Nikhil Kumar Kaka was detained along with his vehicle before filing his nomination.
BJP leaders accused the Punjab Police of obstructing their candidates from filing nominations. They alleged that the gates of the Municipal Corporation office were closed to prevent their entry. Former Union Minister Maharani Preneet Kaur, former Minister Rana Sodhi, BJP Punjab Mahila Morcha President Bibi Jai Inder Kaur, and other senior leaders were also reportedly stopped at the gate.
Amid the chaos, the nomination papers of BJP candidates Varun Jindal (Ward 46) and Sushil Nayar (Ward 34) were allegedly torn. A heavy police presence was deployed outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office to manage the situation.
The BJP has strongly condemned the incidents, claiming it as an attack on democratic processes, and has demanded immediate action against those responsible.
