New Delhi, 29 November 2024 – A photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi standing in Parliament with a female commando positioned behind him is making waves on social media. Shared by prominent figures like actress Kangana Ranaut, the image has sparked curiosity about the role and identity of women in India’s Special Protection Group (SPG).
Speculation surrounds whether the woman in the viral photo is part of the elite SPG team. While her identity and service details remain undisclosed, the presence of women in the SPG has long been a testament to the evolving role of women in high-security operations.
Women commandos have been integral to the SPG for years, managing critical tasks such as surveillance and visitor searches at high-security locations, including Parliament. Since 2015, they have also been inducted into the Close Protection Team (CPT), where they provide immediate security to high-profile individuals, including the Prime Minister.
Currently, approximately 100 women serve in the SPG, performing advanced security duties and accompanying the Prime Minister on domestic and international visits. These commandos also participate in Advanced Security Liaison (ASL) operations, ensuring safety arrangements are in place ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrivals.
The Special Protection Group, established in 1985, is responsible for the security of the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers, and their families. Known for its rigorous training and coordination with the Intelligence Bureau and police, the SPG exemplifies precision in high-level security.
Among the reactions, Member of Parliament Ravneet Bittu praised the contribution of female SPG commandos in a social media post, calling them “Pride of India” and a “recognition of female power.” He further highlighted their role in setting new benchmarks in national security under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.
The viral image has become a symbol of women’s empowerment in New India, showcasing their growing participation in critical fields like security and defense.
