Abuja, 17 November 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Nigeria on Sunday, receiving a grand welcome from the Indian community at Abuja airport. Chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram,” the Indian diaspora gathered in large numbers to greet the Prime Minister during his first-ever visit to the West African nation.

Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Modi took to X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Heartwarming to see the Indian community in Nigeria extending such a warm and vibrant welcome!”

He commended the diaspora for maintaining their cultural ties, noting how they have stayed connected to their roots, language, and traditions despite being far from home.

Modi interacted with numerous members of the Indian community, including women, children, and men, sharing photos of the gathering.

In another tweet, Modi praised the Marathi-speaking community in Nigeria, acknowledging their joy over Marathi recently receiving the status of a Classical Language.

“It is truly commendable how they remain connected to their culture and roots,” he posted.

Ahead of Modi’s arrival, Abuja was adorned with posters and hoardings of the Indian leader, signaling the significance of his visit. Modi’s Nigeria trip marks the first stop in his five-day tour of three countries aimed at bolstering strategic ties.

Following his two-day stay in Nigeria from November 16 to 17, Modi will head to Brazil for the G20 summit before concluding his tour in Guyana.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed Modi at the airport, underlining the importance of the visit in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Indian diaspora expressed excitement about Modi’s presence, viewing it as a key moment for enhancing India-Nigeria cooperation.
