Aizawl, Sept. 13 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Mizoram’s first railway line, a long-awaited project expected to transform connectivity in the landlocked state. The 51-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, built at a cost of ₹8,070 crore, connects Mizoram to the rest of India for the first time by rail, officials said.
Along with the new line, Modi flagged off three train services — the inaugural Rajdhani Express from Aizawl to Delhi, and two passenger trains linking Sairang with Guwahati and Kolkata. Officials said the new services will not only ease travel but also boost trade and economic integration of the northeastern state.
During his visit, the Prime Minister also laid foundation stones for several development initiatives. These include the 45-km Aizawl Bypass road, a 30 TMTPA gas bottling plant, and multiple road projects across Mizoram. Modi additionally inaugurated a residential school at Kawrthah in Mamit district and an Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam in Aizawl.
“This railway line is not just about tracks and trains; it is about opening opportunities for Mizoram’s youth, farmers and entrepreneurs,” an official quoted Modi as saying. He noted that the connectivity push in the Northeast aims to bridge gaps and bring prosperity to the region.
After wrapping up his programmes in Mizoram, Modi was scheduled to fly to Churachandpur in Manipur later in the day, the official added.
