New Delhi, 27 December 2024 – PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday paid tribute to his former teacher Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away today. Dr Singh, a renowned economist and former prime minister, was a faculty member at the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) when Mishra was a graduate student.
Mourning the loss, Mishra remarked, “Dr Manmohan Singh’s passing leaves a void as we have lost an exceptional leader, an eminent economist, and a compassionate human being.” Recalling his time at DSE, he shared, “I first encountered Dr Singh as my professor during my Master of Arts studies. His ability to simplify complex theories in international trade was extraordinary and helped students like me grasp intricate subjects effortlessly.”
Mishra reflected on his early days as a student from Sambalpur district in Odisha, finding inspiration in Dr Singh and other eminent professors of the time, including Amartya Sen, Mrinal Datta Chaudhuri, AM Khusro, and Sukhamoy Chakraborty. “Seeing professors of such stature, including Dr Manmohan Singh, was deeply reassuring for someone from a remote district,” he said.
Mishra also recalled his later interactions with Dr Singh while serving as Secretary to the National Disaster Management Authority and in the Ministry of Agriculture during Dr Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister. “Despite his towering achievements, Dr Singh remained a model of simplicity, sincerity, and humility in every interaction,” Mishra said, describing him as a constant source of inspiration.
Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away earlier today, leaves behind a legacy cherished by students and colleagues alike.
