Chandigarh/Amritsar, February 14: Punjab Police made its biggest heroin recovery of the year, seizing 30 kg of the drug from an alleged smuggler in Amritsar.

The accused, identified as Gursimranjit Singh alias Simran of Baserke Gillan, was arrested with the consignment hidden in his Ford Fiesta, said Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.

DGP Yadav mentioned that Gursimranjit was involved in large-scale heroin smuggling and had recently received a consignment from across the border.

Investigations suggested that Pakistan-based smugglers used drones to transport the drugs. Further probes are underway to identify other links in the network, he added.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Charanjit Singh noted that acting on intelligence inputs, a police team intercepted the suspect’s vehicle near Gharinda.

A search led to the discovery of four packets of heroin, each weighing 7.5 kg, concealed in a black bag.

The SSP stated that questioning of the accused is ongoing to track the entire supply chain, with more arrests expected. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act at Gharinda police station.
