Amethi: A man accused of killing a Dalit family in Amethi was shot in the leg by police on Saturday while they attempted to recover the pistol used in the crime.
According to police reports, the incident occurred when Sub-Inspector Madan Kumar Singh of the Shivratanganj police station was taking possession of the weapon found near a canal track.
As Singh was examining the pistol and its magazine, the suspect, Chandan Verma, allegedly snatched Singh’s gun and fired at him, intending to kill him.
In response, Inspector Sachchidanand Rai fired back, hitting Verma in his right leg, police said.
Verma was arrested near a toll plaza in Noida on Friday night while trying to flee to Delhi.
Sunil Kumar, 35, a government schoolteacher, his 32-year-old wife Poonam, and their daughters Drishti and Suni, aged six and one, were shot dead in Ahorwa Bhawani area of Amethi.
Poonam had once accused Verma of harassing her and also filed a police complaint against him.
