Chandigarh, Jan 17: Panjab University has ordered all affiliated and constituent colleges to install CCTV cameras in examination halls before the May 2026 annual exams to eliminate cheating and maintain academic integrity.

The university administration informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that any institution failing to meet this requirement will be barred from serving as an examination centre.

This decision was formally placed before the court by University Registrar Yajvender Pal Verma during the hearing of a petition filed by the Managing Committee of Guru Nanak College, Ferozepur Cantt.

“The university being cognisant of its responsibilities has already taken a decision to curb the menace of unfair means in the examination centres,” Justice Kuldeep Tiwari noted while reviewing the university’s affidavit.

The legal challenge sought to compel the university and the Controller of Examinations to enforce strict surveillance across all testing sites. The petitioner argued that digital monitoring is essential to ensure transparency and uphold the standards of higher education.

There are currently over 200 colleges affiliated with Panjab University across Punjab and Chandigarh that must comply with the new security protocols.

The Registrar noted that the move is part of a broader effort to create a robust and fair examination environment.

Justice Tiwari expressed the court’s opinion that no further orders were necessary given the university’s proactive stance.

However, the court directed the university to strictly adhere to the undertaking provided in the affidavit.

“In view of the specific direction for its implementation, this court is of the considered opinion that no further order is required to be passed,” the judge said while disposing of the writ petition.
