Chandigarh, March 29 — Aditya Thakur, 22, a second-year computer science student at Panjab University’s University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), succumbed to his injuries on Saturday after being stabbed during a concert at the university’s South Campus on Friday night.

Thakur was among four students attacked during Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma’s performance. Eyewitnesses said the assailants, believed to be outsiders from the adjoining Sector 25 slum, had scaled the campus wall. He was stabbed in the thigh and referred to PGIMER, where he died Saturday morning.

Police have registered a murder case against unidentified attackers at the Sector 11 police station and are working to identify and arrest them. Three other injured students, including one from Chandigarh University, are receiving treatment at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, and are out of danger.

The concert was organised by PU Campus Students Council joint secretary Jasvinder Rana, who was recently booked in a separate case linked to a brawl at the ABVP office in Sector 15.

Despite police concerns over crowd management, the Chandigarh administration had approved Friday’s concert, though a March 25 event featuring Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan was denied permission.

This marks the second death on campus in four months, following a drug overdose incident at a boys’ hostel on November 19, 2024.
