CHANDIGARH, Aug. 27 — With the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections scheduled for September 3, two student outfits — Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) — on Wednesday announced their presidential candidates.

ABVP, the student wing of BJP, has fielded Gauravveer Sohal, a scholar of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS). The group, which has never won the president’s post in PUCSC polls, has promised a green push by installing rooftop solar panels on all academic and administrative buildings to make the campus a “model of sustainable energy practices.” Other pledges include a synthetic athletics track, round-the-clock tuck shops, placement festivals, and SOS panic buttons installed every 100 metres across the university.

SOPU, meanwhile, has named Ardas Kaur, a student of the University Institute of Fashion Technology, as its candidate. This marks the group’s return to the presidential contest after nearly a decade and, perhaps for the first time, with a woman leading its campaign. “We will work for student welfare, promote unity, and raise the collective voice of students,” Ardas said after her nomination.

The campus election, seen as a major event in the student politics of the region, is set to be held on September 3.
