Chandigarh, 3 December 24: The AAP-led Punjab government is preparing for the announcement of urban civic body elections and the enforcement of the model code of conduct, expected later this week.
Elections for five Municipal Corporations, 44 Municipal Councils, and 49 byelections are scheduled for the end of December. However, officials have clarified that polling will not overlap with the Shaheedi Week, observed from December 25 to 27, in honor of Sikh martyrs.
Despite the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) seeking a postponement, the poll schedule remains on track. The notification for conducting urban civic elections was issued on November 22.
State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary confirmed preparations were underway. “The commission is finalizing suitable dates to ensure they do not coincide with Shaheedi Week,” a source quoted by The Tribune said.
