Chandigarh, November 14, 2024: Amid ongoing debates over the Agniveer Scheme introduced by the Central Government, the Punjab Government has made a significant announcement addressing the concerns of Agniveer recruits. The state has pledged to offer government jobs to 800 Agniveer personnel from Punjab who are set to retire in 2027 under this program.

The announcement, shared by MLA Jeevanjot Kaur on X, aims to provide clarity on the future of these youths who will complete their four-year service period as part of the Agniveer Yojana, launched by the Indian Army in 2022. The scheme, which has faced criticism from political parties and young aspirants, limits the tenure of Agniveer recruits to just four years, sparking concerns about their post-retirement prospects.

“The Punjab Government is committed to ensuring a secure future for Agniveer veterans,” Kaur stated, adding that the job guarantee aligns with the state’s efforts to support its youth and address anxieties stemming from the short service duration of the scheme.

The Agniveer Yojana, initially introduced as a measure to modernize military recruitment, faced backlash from several quarters, with critics questioning the limited tenure and its impact on the career prospects of young recruits. Despite assurances from the Central Government about the scheme’s benefits, skepticism remains prevalent.

It’s notable that the Punjab Government’s promise to provide jobs coincides with the end of its current term in 2027, raising questions about the implementation of the commitment. Nonetheless, this move marks a proactive step to alleviate the uncertainties surrounding the first batch of Agniveer retirees.
