Chandigarh, November 6, 2024: Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian announced that sugarcane crushing in the state will commence on November 25, following a meeting of the Punjab State Sugarcane Control Board.
Khudian mentioned a 5% increase in sugarcane cultivation this year, with fields spanning 100,000 hectares compared to 95,000 last year.
He noted that Punjab’s 15 sugar mills—9 cooperative and 6 private—are expected to process around 700 lakh quintals of sugarcane, potentially yielding 62 lakh quintals of sugar this season.
The Minister directed officials to complete all preparations ahead of the crushing season, ensuring a smooth sale process for farmers and timely payments for their produce.
Present at the meeting were Additional Chief Secretary Anurag Verma, Agriculture Commissioner Neelima, Director Agriculture Jaswant Singh, Cane Commissioner Dilbag Singh, and other key officials and members of the State Sugarcane Control Board.
