Chandigarh, Oct 23: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha passed a privilege motion against Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira during a stormy second day of the assembly session. The motion was taken up following a tense confrontation between opposition and treasury bench members, which culminated in a walkout by the Congress party.
As the morning proceedings commenced, Congress lawmakers entered the Well of the House carrying a letter of condemnation and raising slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The opposition maintained that the state government failed to control the drug trade and maintain the law and order situation. Countering the protest, treasury bench members led by Finance Minister Harpal Cheema responded with slogans, with Cheema asserting that Khaira was involved in an ongoing drugs case.
The protest extended outside the Vidhan Sabha complex, where Congress members continued their demonstration. CLP leader Partap Singh Bajwa and PPCC chief Pargat Singh stated that the current administration failed to address the state’s burning issues. Demonstrators wore black robes and declared their intent to press for accountability regarding governance concerns across Punjab.
