Chandigarh, July 22: In a broad daylight theft near the bustling jewellery market in Sector 22-A, unidentified miscreants broke into a parked car and fled with a purse containing ₹1.10 lakh in cash, four mobile phones, and other personal belongings.

The incident took place around 2:30 pm on July 20 when Jagpal Singh, 62, a resident of Zirakpur, had parked his Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire near a house opposite PP Jewellers while visiting the market with his wife and daughter to shop for gold ornaments.

According to Singh, his wife had left her purse under the front passenger seat. When the family returned around 4 pm, they discovered the car’s front left window smashed and the purse missing.

Singh immediately alerted the police, who have registered a case under Section 305(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Sector 17 police station. A probe has been launched to trace the culprits.

Police said CCTV footage from nearby shops is being reviewed and teams have been deployed to identify suspects. The incident has raised fresh concerns about security in high-footfall commercial areas of the city.
