New Delhi/Pragyaraj, 28 January 2025: AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has called for immediate government action to address the sharp rise in airfare to Prayagraj during the ongoing Maha Kumbh.
He criticized airlines for exploiting the sacred occasion by charging exorbitant prices, with ticket rates soaring from the usual Rs. 5,000 to nearly Rs. 60,000.
“For followers of Sanatan Dharma, the Maha Kumbh is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of faith. It is shocking that airlines are turning this holy festival into a profiteering venture,” Chadha said.
He urged the government to impose price caps or provide affordable travel options for devotees attending the event, which is held in Prayagraj after 144 years.
The MP highlighted the plight of millions of pilgrims who seek to participate in spiritual practices at the Maha Kumbh but are being deterred by skyrocketing airfare.
“This is blatant profiteering and deeply unfair to the devotees,” he stated, calling for a swift resolution.
Chadha pointed to a precedent of successful government intervention, citing the introduction of budget-friendly ‘Udaan Yatri Cafes’ at airports following complaints of overpriced food.
He expressed hope that similar steps would be taken to ensure fair travel options for pilgrims heading to Prayagraj.
The AAP leader’s appeal comes amidst growing public discontent over the high travel costs during the sacred festival.
