Chandigarh, July 31 — Moderate rainfall in the last 24 hours brought down temperatures across the Tricity region, offering a brief respite from the muggy weather but also leaving several roads waterlogged, causing inconvenience to commuters.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana for the next four days starting Saturday.

Between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, Chandigarh received 39.2 mm rainfall, followed by a meagre 0.4 mm during the day. The maximum temperature fell by 3.5 degrees to 30.4°C, while the minimum dropped 2.8 degrees to 24.4°C, both below seasonal averages.

While the rain brought relief from the heat, several low-lying areas, roads, streets, and roundabouts in Chandigarh were submerged, disrupting traffic and daily routines. Humidity levels soared to 94 per cent.

In the Tricity, Mohali saw the coolest weather with temperatures at 29.4°C (max) and 24.8°C (min), while Panchkula recorded the highest at 30.8°C (max) and 24.9°C (min).

Mohali received 24 mm rainfall, while Panchkula saw just 0.5 mm in the same period. Across Punjab and Haryana, light to moderate showers were observed, with isolated pockets experiencing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

“There was a fall of 0.6 and 0.2 degrees in average maximum temperature in Punjab and Haryana, respectively, with readings appreciably below normal,” IMD officials said. Gurdaspur (33.5°C) and Palwal (32°C) registered the highest maximums in the two states.

The weather office has forecast cloudy skies with intermittent rain and thunder activity for Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula till August 5.
