Rain lashes Tricity, yellow alert issued

CHANDIGARH, Aug. 24 — A spell of light to moderate rain drenched Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula on Sunday evening, once again leaving several low-lying areas and roads waterlogged and causing traffic snarls across the Tricity.

According to the meteorological department, Chandigarh recorded 24.8 mm of rainfall till 5:30 p.m., while Mohali and Panchkula received 23.5 mm and similar showers, respectively. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana on Monday and Tuesday.

Officials predicted a partly to generally cloudy sky with more rain and thunderstorms in the Tricity until August 29, with maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around 31°C and 25°C.

On Sunday, Chandigarh registered 34.6°C as the maximum and 26.7°C as the minimum temperature, both slightly above normal. Mohali recorded 34°C and 26.8°C, while Panchkula saw 33.7°C and 26°C. Despite the showers, Chandigarh’s relative humidity stood at 93 percent.
