Amritsar/Chandigarh: Jagir Kaur, the former president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), submitted her response in person at the Akal Takht secretariat on Wednesday, in compliance with Akal Takht’s directions. Reports suggest that she faced questioning regarding her alleged involvement in “roma di beadbi” (dishonoring the hair), a charge she refuted, claiming it stems from political rivalry aimed at tarnishing her reputation.
On September 26, Akal Takht sent her a notice demanding an explanation within a week about a complaint related to a murder case involving her daughter that dates back over 20 years.
In 2018, Kaur was cleared of charges in her daughter’s murder by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Although she ran for the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 as an SAD candidate from Khadoor Sahib and was unsuccessful, Kaur has held the position of SGPC president twice since then.
“The response to these baseless allegations could have been brief, but I took the time to explain to the Jathedar Sahib the hidden agenda my opponents have to defame and embarrass me. The Jathedar Sahib should have either ignored the claims or conducted a proper investigation to verify the facts before issuing this notice,” she stated.
She expressed her deep hurt at receiving such a notice, saying, “This notice felt like pouring salt on my wounds. In 1999, I lost my 18-year-old daughter, and my political rivals tested a mother’s patience by bringing false charges against me. Thankfully, I was cleared of those charges. I also want to emphasize that I come from a family that has always served the Khalsa Panth and upheld the ‘Sikh rehat maryada.’
