Chamba, August 8: A major transit mishap in the Churah sub-division of Chamba district resulted in the loss of seven lives and injuries to eleven others after a private passenger bus slipped off the mountain highway early Saturday morning.
The vehicle was traversing the Bairagarh-Chamba route when it lost traction near the Chalunj bend, overturning completely before coming to rest on a secondary road situated directly below.
Emergency responders along with nearby residents initiated relief operations immediately, working to extricate commuters trapped beneath the overturned frame. Heavy earthmoving machinery, including backhoe loaders, was brought to the site to hoist the wreckage and clear access for rescue teams.
Authorities confirmed that the injured were promptly evacuated to neighboring medical facilities for treatment, noting that the casualty figures could undergo revision given the critical state of several victims. Official identification procedures for the deceased remain ongoing.
Commenting on the incident, local representative Hans Raj expressed deep sorrow regarding the fatalities, extending condolences to the affected families and wishing swift recovery to those undergoing medical care.
