Amritsar, 23 December, 2024: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has canceled its emergency executive committee meeting, originally scheduled for December 23. Sources revealed that the meeting was intended to review the committee’s recent decision regarding Takht Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh.
The SGPC’s December 19 executive meeting at Degsar Sahib Katana in Ludhiana placed restrictions on Giani Harpreet Singh’s services.
It also established a three-member panel, comprising senior vice president Raghujit Singh Virk, general secretary Sher Singh Mandwala, and executive member Daljit Singh Bhinder, to oversee the issue.
Until the panel submits its investigation report, the incumbent head granthi of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Giani Jagtar Singh, will perform duties under the Takht’s jurisdiction.
SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Manan confirmed the cancellation, attributing it to prior commitments of president Harjinder Singh Dhami. “All executive committee members have been informed about the cancellation,” Manan said.
The meeting, planned for noon at the SGPC headquarters, was described by Manan as being called to address an “important issue.” Had it occurred, it would have been the third executive meeting of the SGPC in two weeks.
The decision to restrict Giani Harpreet Singh’s role has faced criticism from various Sikh groups, with some opposing the SGPC’s move. The now-canceled meeting was expected to discuss the possibility of transferring the investigation to Akal Takht.
