Amritsar, 12 February 2025– Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami welcomed the conviction of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court in connection with the murder of two Sikhs in Saraswati Vihar during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
He called for the strictest punishment for Kumar and urged swift action against others involved.
Dhami described the 1984 Sikh massacre as one of history’s worst crimes against humanity, with victims still awaiting justice after nearly four decades.
He underlined that apart from Kumar, other Congress leaders, including Jagdish Tytler, played a role in the violence and should also face severe punishment.
Accusing the Congress of shielding those responsible, Dhami said the party had rewarded perpetrators with political positions instead of addressing Sikh grievances.
He expressed hope that the court’s verdict would offer some solace to the Sikh community.
He urged the Indian government to expedite pending cases related to the riots through fast-track courts to prevent further delays in justice.
Besides, he called for a formal resolution in Parliament apologizing for the 1984 Sikh massacre as a tribute to the victims.
