SGPC Faces Ultimatum Over Takht Jathedar Appointments

Amritsar, May 5: — Tensions are mounting within Sikh religious circles as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) faces a May 10 deadline to reverse its controversial decisions on Takht jathedar appointments.

The Damdami Taksal and Sant Samaj, led by Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa ‘Dhuma’, along with several Nihang Singh organizations, have issued a stern ultimatum: if the SGPC does not revoke the recent appointments and reinstate the previously serving jathedars, they will initiate a protest outside Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal’s residence in Badal village.

“This is a question of Panthic maryada and Sikh principles,” Baba Harnam Singh said.

“If the SGPC fails to act by May 10, we will be left with no choice but to revive our agitation.”

According to the plan announced by Baba Harnam Singh, starting June 11, a jatha of around 500 Gursikhs will gather outside Sukhbir Singh Badal’s residence each month.

“Every first Sunday, the jatha will hold a peaceful sit-in while reciting Gurbani as a symbolic protest,” he stated.

The groups have also called upon the Sikh community to enforce a complete boycott of Kuldeep Singh Gargaj and Baba Tek Singh Dhanaula—figures they claim were appointed in violation of long-standing Panthic traditions and Sikh tenets.

The SGPC has yet to issue a formal response, even as pressure builds from influential religious factions that consider the appointments illegitimate and damaging to the unity of the Sikh Panth.
