Amritsar, 17 February 2025: Harjinder Singh Dhami has resigned as president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), following a recent controversy over the dismissal of Giani Harpreet Singh as jathedar of Damdama Sahib.
In a statement made during a hastily arranged media briefing, Dhami reaffirmed his commitment to the Akal Takht, stating that the decision to remove him from his position was driven by moral responsibility.
He said, “As pardhan, I take responsibility and resign from the post on moral grounds with immediate effect.”
The resignation comes in the wake of strong criticism from Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, who condemned the termination of Giani Harpreet Singh’s services. On February 13, Raghbir Singh described the move as “highly condemnable” and “unfortunate.”
Dhami also mentioned that he had formally requested the Akal Takht Jathedar to relieve him from his role in a seven-member committee formed by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to supervise its new membership drive.
“I have written to Jathedar Raghbir Singh asking for my removal from the committee,” he added.
In addition, Dhami submitted his resignation to the SGPC executive committee, signaling his willingness to step down from all associated responsibilities.
