PANCHKULA, May 20 — Two sisters working as domestic helpers allegedly fled with ₹15 lakh in cash, clothing, and a high-end mobile phone from a Sector-4 residence in the early hours of Monday, prompting a theft case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Construction contractor Ranjan Singh, the complainant, informed the Mansa Devi Complex (MDC) police station that the younger sister, Sonika, had been employed as a live-in maid at his home for over two years. Her elder sister, Monika, had joined the household staff about 25 days ago.
According to Singh, the theft occurred between 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. “After dinner on Sunday, everyone went to their rooms by 11:30 p.m. My mother, who sleeps in the same room as the maids, kept the house and cupboard keys under her pillow,” he said. “During the early hours, Sonika and Monika quietly took the keys and accessed a cupboard in the adjacent room, stealing ₹15 lakh in cash.”
The sisters’ father and brother were also employed by Singh at his construction site. Police have registered a case under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to theft by a servant or clerk. A search operation is underway to trace and arrest the accused.
In a separate case, Panchkula Police apprehended Rajkumar, a known burglar wanted in multiple theft cases. His arrest followed a complaint by Surjit Rana, a resident of Sector-7, who reported a burglary at his home on April 14, during which gold and diamond jewellery, a mobile phone, and ₹8,000 in cash were stolen.
Investigators tracked Rajkumar to the Sector-14 slums. Originally from Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh, Rajkumar has three prior theft cases registered against him at Sector-14 and Sector-5 police stations. He had been out on bail since November 2024.
Following his arrest, Rajkumar was produced in court on Monday and remanded to four days of police custody for further interrogation.
