New Delhi: The Supreme Court directed the office of the Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) on Friday to refrain from conducting elections for the position of chairman of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing Committee.

The court warned, “We will take this matter seriously if you proceed with the elections for the MCD Standing Committee chairman.”

The court expressed concern over the L-G office’s “tearing hurry” to hold elections for a member of the MCD Standing Committee, stating that democracy could be at risk if executive powers under the MCD Act are misused to conduct such elections.

Moreover, the court sought a response from the L-G’s office regarding Mayor Shelly Oberoi’s plea challenging the recent elections for the MCD Standing Committee.
