Chandigarh, April 4: The Department of Community Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32), Chandigarh, launched the National Mental Health Survey (NMHS-2) on Thursday at Sood Bhawan to assess mental health trends across the city.

Funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, and supported by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the nationwide survey is being conducted after nearly a decade. GMCH-32 has been assigned the responsibility for Chandigarh’s data collection.

“The field staff will visit households to interview residents about mental health issues,” said Dr. Sonia Puri, associate professor in the Department of Community Medicine at GMCH. “Compared to NMHS-1 (2015-16), NMHS-2 will collect more detailed data, which will assist policymakers in developing targeted mental health policies.”

The launch event was attended by Chandigarh Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, GMCH Director Principal Dr. AK Attri, Medical Superintendent Dr. GP Thami, and State Nodal Officer Dr. Ajeet Sidana.
