Tarn Taran Bypoll Sees 59% Turnout Till 5 PM

Tarn Taran, November 11 — Around 59 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 5 pm in the high-stakes Tarn Taran Assembly by-election held on Tuesday, officials said. Polling, which began at 7 am, was scheduled to continue till 6 pm amid tight security arrangements.

The Election Commission said the polling process remained peaceful throughout the day, with steady voter turnout seen in both urban and rural areas. “People came out in good numbers, and the overall atmosphere remained calm,” an official said.

A total of 1,92,838 voters — including 1,00,933 men, 91,897 women and eight third-gender electors — were eligible to cast their votes in the constituency. Voting took place across 222 polling stations set up at 114 locations, of which 60 are in urban areas and 162 in rural parts.

Authorities said four of the polling stations were designated as ‘model booths’ and three as ‘pink booths’ managed entirely by women officials.

Security was heightened throughout the constituency, with Punjab Police maintaining the outer perimeter at most polling stations and Central Armed Police Forces deployed inside for the inner cordon.

Counting of votes will take place on November 14, the officials said.
