Temperatures Plunge Across Punjab

Chandigarh, 13 December 2024: North India, including Punjab, remains in the grip of an intense cold wave, with a state-wide alert issued by the Meteorological Department.

Health experts have advised children and the elderly to stay indoors as temperatures plummet.

Faridkot and Pathankot recorded the lowest temperatures in Punjab at 3°C and 4.3°C respectively. Bathinda reported 4.6°C, Patiala 4.5°C, Amritsar 5°C, and Ludhiana 6.2°C.

The extreme cold has triggered a surge in pediatric illnesses. Young children and newborns are increasingly affected by chest infections, high fevers, breathing difficulties, and pneumonia. Hospitals report a steady rise in patients seeking treatment for winter-related ailments.

A pediatric specialist urged parents to dress children in warm clothing and avoid purchasing street food during the season, citing a sharp increase in cases linked to exposure to cold temperatures.

The early arrival of cold this year is attributed to snowfall in Shimla and Solan on December 8 and 9, marking the earliest in 27 years. The northwesterly winds carrying cold from the mountains have caused night temperatures to drop sharply, with a 3°C dip recorded in many places.

Typically, such severe cold is experienced in late December or January, but this year’s early snowfall has accelerated the seasonal chill across the region.
