Sri Anandpur Sahib, March 11, 2025 – Traditional sports are proving to be a powerful tool in keeping youth away from drugs while promoting discipline and well-being, said Harjeet Singh Grewal, National President of the National Gatka Association of India and Joint Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations, Punjab on the inaugural day of the Punjab Heritage Games at Charn Ganga Stadium, organized by the Rupnagar District Administration.

Grewal stressed that such events inspire young people to reconnect with their cultural roots.

“These games not only revive Punjab’s martial traditions but also instill a sense of pride and self-defense among the youth,” he stated.

The event featured a dynamic display of heritage sports, including Gatka demonstrations, Gatka Stick-Farrie contests, archery, tent pegging, and turban-tying competitions. Cultural performances such as Luddi, Bhangra, Giddha, Dhadhi, and Kavishri captivated the audience, while boys and girls enthusiastically participated in the turban-tying competition.

Grewal noted that Gatka’s growing popularity in India and abroad has reignited interest in traditional sports, reinforcing their role in shaping a drug-free and disciplined lifestyle.

“These games serve as a bridge between our youth and their rich cultural legacy,” he said.

The first day concluded with prize distributions to the winners, marking a strong start to the event.

Grewal expressed confidence that such initiatives will continue to inspire young people to embrace their heritage while leading a healthy and purposeful life.
