Chandigarh, April 5: The Punjab government has formally extended the reach of the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna (MMSY) to include the state’s transport workforce, following a dedicated two-day health camp in Patiala. This initiative, directed by the Bhagwant Mann administration, aims to provide comprehensive medical coverage to bus drivers, auto-rickshaw operators, and taxi workers who have historically faced barriers to consistent healthcare.
During the event held at the PRTC Head Office on April 1 and 2, eligible workers and their families were enrolled on the spot and issued Sehat Cards. These cards provide cashless healthcare benefits of up to Rs 10 lakh per family annually. Officials stated that this financial protection is vital for a community often characterized by irregular incomes and high physical strain.
“Bringing transport workers under CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna is an important step,” Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh affirmed. He noted that because these workers are constantly mobile, they frequently delay necessary medical treatments.
PRTC Chairman Harpal Juneja maintained that the health security of the transport sector is a priority for the state, as these workers are essential to Punjab’s connectivity. The program’s expansion is supported by a Rs 2,000 crore allocation in the 2026–27 Budget, intended to bolster the capacity of the health scheme.
AAP Punjab General Secretary Baltej Pannu declared that the high participation rate at the camp reflects a growing trust in the government’s commitment to accessible healthcare. To date, over 30 lakh Sehat Cards have been issued across the state, with approximately 50,000 new enrollments occurring daily.
