Chandigarh, June 18— After a brief cooldown, temperatures in the Tricity region surged again on Wednesday, with Chandigarh’s maximum temperature jumping by 5.1 degrees Celsius within 24 hours, settling at 36.1°C. The increase followed a three-day dip, including Tuesday’s notable drop of 6.4 degrees. The minimum temperature also climbed slightly by 0.8°C overnight, reaching 25.9°C.
While early morning cloud cover, light rain, and moderate winds offered some relief, the rest of the day remained warm across Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh recorded only a trace amount of rainfall—0.1 mm—while Panchkula saw 0.5 mm. “The drizzle and overcast conditions helped ease the heat briefly,” said an official from the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh.
A yellow alert remains in effect for isolated parts of Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h. IMD also predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places over the weekend and early next week. Despite the alert, maximum temperatures in the Tricity are expected to remain below the 40-degree mark through June 23.
Faridkot in Punjab and Sirsa in Haryana recorded the highest minimum temperatures on Tuesday night at 28.6°C and 27.8°C, respectively. Sirsa also posted the region’s highest maximum on Wednesday at 38.6°C, followed closely by Pathankot at 38.1°C. On the cooler end, Sonepat (23.5°C) and Ropar (24.2°C) reported the lowest night temperatures across the broader region.
“The seasonal peak of 44 degrees was recorded on June 10, but we expect a gradual dip in maximum temperatures over the coming days,” the IMD said in its daily bulletin. According to the department, average maximum temperatures have risen by 3.6°C in Punjab and 1.4°C in Haryana since the last reading.
In the Tricity, Chandigarh remained the warmest on Wednesday, followed by Mohali and then Panchkula, which logged the lowest daytime maximum at 34.5°C.
