Washington DC, 15 February 2025 –President Donald Trump, in collaboration with industrialist Elon Musk, has moved to downsize the federal workforce, resulting in 10,000 layoffs across multiple government agencies. The move is part of an effort to reduce the number of federal employees, currently at 2.3 million.
According to reports, those affected had been employed for less than two years. In addition to the layoffs, approximately 75,000 federal employees have accepted buyouts, agreeing to resign by year’s end while continuing to receive salaries for a few more months.
The Department of Homeland Security has suffered the most significant impact, cutting 2,300 positions. The department employs 70,000 people. The Department of Agriculture followed, dismissing 3,400 workers from its workforce of over 100,000. Meanwhile, the Department of Energy laid off between 1,200 and 2,000 employees out of its 14,000 staff and 95,000 contractors.
By Thursday and Friday, 9,500 employees had been laid off, with more departures expected as part of the administration’s workforce reduction efforts.
