Chandigarh, Nov 7: Police have arrested two men for allegedly robbing a cyclist at knifepoint near the Sector 33/45 dividing road, officials said on Thursday. The duo was caught with the victim’s stolen mobile phone and the knife reportedly used in the crime.

The accused have been identified as Nitin, alias Tira, 23, and Parveen Swain, 29, both residents of Burail. Police said Nitin has a prior criminal record, with nine cases registered against him in Chandigarh.

The incident reportedly took place around 10 pm on November 4, when Vijay Pal, a resident of Sector 36, was returning home on his bicycle from Sector 45. “Two men stopped me on the road and asked for a bidi. When I refused, one of them pressed a knife against my back while the other snatched my phone,” Vijay Pal told police.

Following a complaint at Sector 45 police post, a team from Burail police post, under Sector 34 police station, traced and arrested the suspects. The knife used in the robbery was also recovered from their possession.

A case has been registered under Sections 311 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, at Sector 34 police station. “We are investigating further to check if the accused were involved in any other similar incidents in the city,” a police officer said.
