AMRITSAR, Oct 21 — Punjab Police on Tuesday said they arrested two alleged terror operatives and recovered a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) that was meant for a “targeted terror attack.”
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation by Amritsar Rural Police in coordination with central agencies.
“In an intelligence-based operation, Amritsar Rural Police, in close coordination with central agencies, apprehended two terror operatives — Mehakdeep Singh alias Mehak and Aditya alias Adhi — from Amritsar and recovered one rocket-propelled grenade (RPG),” Yadav posted on X.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the two were in contact with a Pakistan-based Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) operative who sent them the weapon. They were also allegedly in touch with Harpreet Singh alias Vicky, currently lodged in Ferozepur Jail, the DGP said.
He added that the RPG was intended for a “targeted terror attack.”
“A first information report (FIR) has been registered at Gharinda police station in Amritsar. Further investigation is underway to unearth the entire network,” Yadav noted, reiterating the state police’s commitment to dismantling transnational terror and organised crime networks backed by Pakistan’s ISI.
The arrests come amid heightened vigilance along Punjab’s international border following multiple recoveries of weapons and drugs suspected to have been dropped via drones from across the border.
On October 18, Punjab Police, in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF), recovered a packet of heroin during a search operation near Tindiwala village in Ferozepur district. “Acting on specific intelligence, alert BSF troops, in coordination with Punjab Police, conducted a search operation and recovered one packet of heroin weighing 602 grams from a field near Tindiwala,” a BSF spokesperson said.
On the same day, BSF troops on the Amritsar border recovered a large packet containing 3.6 kg of ICE drug from a farmland near Bhaini Rajputana village. “The packet, wrapped in yellow adhesive tape with a metal ring and illuminating strips attached, indicates a drone dropping,” the BSF’s Punjab Frontier public relations officer said in a release.
In another search operation, the BSF recovered a pistol similarly wrapped in yellow adhesive tape from a field near Roranwala Khurd village in Amritsar.
