Jalandhar, 21 July: A five-year-old girl was crushed to death by her school bus inside the premises of SD Public School in Adampur on Monday morning. The victim, Kirat Kaur, a UKG student and resident of Udesiyan village near Alawalpur, died on the spot after the bus ran her over while she was de-boarding, police said.

CCTV footage from the school shows that Kirat had just gotten off the bus and was standing near its rear wheel when the driver moved the vehicle without checking. The child was fatally hit. The driver, identified as Jeewan Singh of Khichipur village in Jalandhar district, fled the spot immediately after the incident.

Angered by the incident, Kirat’s family members and local villagers blocked the Jalandhar-Adampur road demanding strict action against the school management and the absconding driver. The protest was called off after police arrested the driver.

A case has been registered under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 281 (rash driving), and 125-A (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The school bus has been impounded and a medical examination of the driver is underway, said Investigating Officer Ravinder Pal.

Police are also probing whether safety protocols for children were in place during boarding and de-boarding.
