Sultanpur, OCT 26: A special MP/MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday acquitted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a 2018 criminal defamation case. Additional Civil Judge Shubham Verma pronounced the “not guilty” verdict after previously rescheduling the judgment date from October 13 to October 26.
The legal matter stemmed from comments Gandhi made during a political rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections. During the campaign, Gandhi allegedly made objectionable remarks targeting Amit Shah, who was serving as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the time.
The defamation complaint was lodged on August 4, 2018, by local BJP politician Vijay Mishra, a former chairman of the District Cooperative Bank in Sultanpur. After years of legal proceedings, the court ruled that the charges brought against the Congress leader were not sustained, resulting in his full acquittal.
