Shimla: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of USD 162 million to bolster tourism development in Himachal Pradesh.
Announced on Thursday, the project will enhance the state’s tourism potential by focusing on the preservation and upgrading of its cultural and heritage sites, while also promoting sustainable and inclusive tourism, according to the officials.
Vivek Vishal, a Senior Project Officer at ADB, stated that the initiative is designed to strengthen Himachal Pradesh’s position as a significant tourism destination. The project will involve the development of modern amenities, restoration of historical landmarks, and improvement of overall tourism infrastructure. Targeted districts for the “Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism Development Projects” include Mandi, Hamirpur, Kullu, and Kangra, he said.
The project outlines several major developments: Heritage and Cultural Sites: The initiative will promote heritage centers in Mandi and Hamirpur, with plans to restore Naggar Castle in Kullu to its historical state. Public Spaces and Facilities: Plans include beautifying public spaces and constructing modern tourist facilities, including a new convention center in Kangra. Wayside Amenities: Essential amenities will be upgraded along tourist routes in Kullu, Hamirpur, and Kangra to improve visitor experiences.
Moreover, the project will incorporate environmentally sustainable solutions, such as solar lighting and electric vehicles.
Accessibility will be a priority, ensuring that facilities cater to the elderly, women, children, and persons with disabilities to promote an inclusive tourism experience, he added.
New attractions will also be introduced, including wellness centers, recreational hubs for tourists, an adventure sports center, a water park complex, and biking trails. These developments are anticipated to create jobs for local communities and significantly boost the regional economy, he said further.
