Chandigarh, Jan 15: The Chandigarh administration has launched a magisterial inquiry following the deaths of over 60 cows and calves at the Municipal Corporation’s largest cattle shed in Makhan Majra. The incident, discovered Wednesday morning, led to the immediate suspension of Medical Officer Health Dr. Inderdeep Kaur and veterinary doctor Dr. Ravinder Dhaliwal for alleged negligence.

Preliminary investigations suggest the deaths may be linked to a prolonged breakdown of the Animal Carcass Incinerator Plant located near the Raipur Kalan facility. Officials noted that the incinerator had been non-functional for several days, resulting in a backlog of carcasses that were reportedly left in the open.

“The veterinary doctor in charge has been suspended and strict action will be taken against all others found guilty of negligence,” Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla said after visiting the site with the Deputy Commissioner and MC Commissioner.

The UT administration has appointed Additional District Magistrate Amandeep Singh Bhatti to lead the probe, with instructions to submit a final report within one week. The inquiry will scrutinize post-mortem and viscera results to determine the exact cause of death and identify any administrative lapses in the management of the 1,000-capacity shed.
