Chandigarh, January 5: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Sunday expressed concern over the prevailing law and order situation in the state, saying repeated incidents of violence have shaken public confidence.
Referring to recent crimes, including the killing of a sarpanch in Amritsar during a wedding function, Warring said such incidents have created anxiety among people.
“There is a growing perception among people that the police presence is not being felt as strongly as it should be,” he said, adding that criminals appear increasingly confident.
Commenting on the Amritsar incident, where the killing took place in full public view, Warring said the manner in which the assailants carried out the crime suggested a lack of fear of law.
“They came openly, without covering their faces, and carried out the act in a public gathering,” he said. “This raises serious questions about deterrence.”
Warring also referred to an earlier incident at a wedding in Ludhiana where two people were killed, noting that arrests in that case are still awaited.
“Even after nearly two months, the accused have not been apprehended. This naturally worries people,” he said.
The PCC president said the government and police need to reassure citizens that crime will be dealt with firmly.
“People want to feel secure in their homes and public spaces,” he said, while urging authorities to review policing strategies and ensure effective action.
