Saharanpur, 16 February 2025 – A woman from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, tested positive for HIV after allegedly being injected with an infected syringe by her in-laws for not meeting their dowry demands, police said.

According to Station House Officer (SHO) Rojant Tyagi, the woman’s father told police his daughter, Sonal, married Abhishek from Haridwar, Uttarakhand, on February 15, 2023.

He alleged that despite giving cash, jewelry, and a car beyond their means, the in-laws demanded a bigger vehicle and an additional ₹25 lakh.

“When the demand was not met, Abhishek’s family allegedly harassed Sonal mentally and physically before throwing her out,” Tyagi said, citing the complaint.

The woman’s parents also claimed her in-laws administered “random medicines” before injecting her with an HIV-infected syringe.

“We took her to a hospital after her health deteriorated. There, it was found she was HIV positive,” the complaint stated.

Following an order from the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, police registered a case on February 11 against four people, including Abhishek and his brother, under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder), as well as provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act.

When asked about the alleged injection, Tyagi said the claims would be verified during the investigation.
