Kumbra (Mohali), June 13 — A 25-year-old woman ended her life in her paying guest (PG) accommodation in Kumbra village after allegedly being deceived in a romantic relationship with a married man.
The woman, a native of Baba Bakala village in Amritsar’s Beas tehsil, had been residing in Kumbra for the past eight months while working various jobs in Mohali following her graduation. Police found her hanging in her PG room, and preliminary investigations point to a case of emotional betrayal that pushed her to the extreme step.
According to her paternal uncle, the deceased was the eldest of four daughters. She had confided in her family a few months ago about her relationship with a man named Sukhi and her desire to marry him. The family had agreed to the match after discussions, believing Sukhi to be unmarried and sincere.
However, days before the tragedy, she reportedly informed her mother that Sukhi was already married and had refused to marry her, leaving her feeling shattered. “She told her mother that her life had been ruined,” the uncle stated in his complaint to the police.
Based on the family’s statement, the police have registered a case under Section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Sukhi, who is also a resident of Kumbra village. He is currently absconding.
“We are making efforts to trace and arrest the accused. The statements from the family and the evidence collected so far suggest a case of betrayal and emotional manipulation,” a police official said.
The incident has sparked anguish in the local community, highlighting concerns over trust, deception, and mental health issues among young women living away from home. Police have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure justice for the victim.
