Women Advised to Cut Back on Dairy During Periods

Chandigarh, Sept 29: Women experiencing menstrual discomfort may need to rethink their diet, with health experts advising caution on consuming dairy products during periods.

According to nutritionists, milk, cheese, and other dairy items are rich in saturated fats and arachidonic acid, which can trigger the release of prostaglandins — compounds that intensify uterine contractions, leading to stronger cramps. Dairy may also contribute to bloating, gas, and digestive unease, symptoms already common during menstruation.

“While dairy is a good source of calcium and protein, it can also worsen inflammation and water retention during periods,” said a gynecology consultant. “Switching to alternatives like plant-based milk, nuts, and leafy greens can ease discomfort without compromising nutrition.”

Doctors emphasize that the impact varies among women. Those with lactose intolerance or sensitivity often face more pronounced symptoms if they consume dairy during their cycle.

Health professionals suggest moderating dairy intake rather than eliminating it completely. Pairing balanced meals with adequate hydration, iron-rich foods, and gentle exercise is seen as more effective in easing period pain and fatigue.

The advice comes as awareness grows around the role of diet in managing menstrual health, with more women turning to nutrition-based remedies alongside medical guidance.
